Another year of Remixapod down and we have had a grand time. We want to give a massive thanks to everyone who gave their works, time, and effort into this. We couldn’t have done it without everyone who submitted podfic, made remixes, created treats, boosted remixapod itself, or encouraged all the artists that put their hand up to participate. Every single thing that has been made for this year’s remixapod is amazing!

We want to do a couple things to wrap up the challenge for 2020.

Firstly, we’d really like to encourage you to browse the main collection here, or the treats collection, and find a work to leave a comment on (especially if a work has not had any comments yet!). Our remixers (and treat fairies) were awesome in participating, and made some really cool, thoughtful works, so we’d love if they could get some more love! If you’re a podficcer whose work got remixed, even writing a quick line to say that you like what they made, or are grateful for their remix, would mean so much to everyone who made stuff! We are all validation goblins at heart, after all.

Secondly, we’d hugely appreciate it if you could give us some feedback via this google form; this is our second year running and we know there’s always room for improvement. We don’t want to add any pressure, so you can do so anonymously. If there’s anything you liked, disliked, or think could be better next time, please let us know here.

We’re past the submission deadline, and we have so many wonderful remixes to reveal later on!

For remix participants who have extensions, are pinch-hitting, or want to submit another remix, the AO3 collection is now moderated which means that when you submit your works, it will not show up in the collection until we approve it.

As a general reminder, please make sure you include a description or transcript if your remix is not text-based. Such things can include alt- or plain-text for images (which can be as long or short as you like, as long as they describe the image). If you’ve made a fanmix, this can be linking to the lyric pages of the songs you’ve used, or including excerpts of the lyrics. If your remix is audio or podfic without a pre-existing text, then a transcript is required, and feel free to request help generating one if you don’t think you’ll have time!

The Remixapod 2020 collection goes live anonymously on June 7th. Please make sure your AO3 work is complete before the 7th, as your mods are in two different time zones and we don’t want you to get caught out with an incomplete work if the collection opens before you add your finishing touches! This includes making sure all your links and embedded images work, you’ve added your various creator’s notes, and linked back to the correct Work/s Inspired By. The creators for all these wonderful remixes will be revealed a week later on June 14th.

And hey, if you’re all finished and really want to get stuck into some more remixing, or if you’re a podficcer who still wants to get involved, how about checking out our treats spreadsheet and creating a no-minimums treat? If you decide to create a treat, remember that we have a separate collection for them (remixapod 2020 - treats). This collection will remain open and unmoderated past the author reveals date, so submit works to your heart’s content.

Emails have been sent out for the second check-in. By now, as a guideline, remixers should be working on the remixes they have chosen to do. The treats spreadsheet is also out now for those that want to start working on treats (see the treats & posting instructions post for more details).

Remixers should reply to their email by midnight on Saturday 16th May, current Pacific timezone (use this Timebie link to convert that to your local time), to let us know if they are still participating in this challenge. We don't need any details about the remix, just a reply to let us know that they’re still participating. If we don't get a reply by this time, we'll assume that they’ve dropped out, and we'll start looking for a pinch-hitter.

Posting Instructions

Please link the podfic(s) you’re remixing as a Work(s) Inspired By when you’re creating your AO3 draft. Gifting your remix to the podficcer you’re matched with is not required.

Please feel free to respond to any notes on the podfic that you remixed, in an author’s note or similar, or to provide any similar commentary on the remix you make. (We like to think this encourages comments!)

All non text-based remixes must have a transcript or description (fanmixes may provide links to lyrics pages instead).

Also, here’s a reminder of the various format minimums:

• Traditional fic and not!fic: 500 words
• Poetry: 20 lines
• Podfic remix/splices: 1 minute
• Oral not!fic: 3 minutes
• Fanmix: 10 songs
• Fanvid: 30 seconds
• Digital art: 2000 pixels (20x100, 80x250, etc.)
• For analogue art and other physical creations, the only minimum requirement is that you consider it complete.
• For any formats where minimums are not specified, we only require that you consider it complete (or use your judgement).

Remixes

To submit your remixes to this challenge, please add your AO3 work to the main collection:

The main collection is unrevealed, which means once you add your work to the collection and post, it will be found under Works > Works in Collections, rather than the usual place. It will also not be deleted from your drafts after a month. The collection is also anonymous, which means nobody will be able to see which work is yours within the collection.

The main collection will close at midnight Pacific time on the 2nd June 2020.

Treats

The treats collection is completely open and unrestricted, which means that anyone will be able to see any works you submit to it. We will also not be closing the collection at the end of the Remixapod timeline (but we’ll stop doing any promo after that point).

Things we need in your sign-up:

• Email - we need an email address to contact you on. This is how we’ll send you your matched list of podfics
• Fandoms - include all the fandoms you could listen to a podfic and create a remix for, chosen from the tagset you can find on the signup form.
• Whether you plan on writing purely traditional fanfic remix or making a remix of any format. This might feel like an arbitrary division, but it’s what we’re basing part of our matching on.
  • Reminder: all non text-based remixes must have a transcript or description (fanmixes may provide links to lyrics pages instead).

Guidelines for your sign-up:

• You can include a list of Do Not Wants (DNW)/Vetoes. Your DNW list can include tropes (e.g. “mpreg” or “kidfic”), characters (e.g. “Tony Stark” or “David from Animorphs”), ships (e.g. “Harry Potter/anyone”) or ratings, as well as other requests. We won’t match you with podfics containing those elements, as far as we’re able to guarantee without listening to the podfic.
• You can include a maximum podfic duration. You won’t be matched with any podfic over this duration. (The list of podfic you receive may contain podfic longer than this, but will include at least one that matches one of your fandoms and is under this maximum duration.)
• When you receive your match you will be able to see all of the podfic that they submitted, not just the podfic that you were matched on. At least one of these podfic will match your fandom, DNW/veto and maximum duration criteria.

Remixapod is a multi-fandom remix challenge where creators make multiformat fanworks that are remixes of, or inspired by, audio podfics.

Different from last year, Remixapod 2020 is open for multiformat remixes! The minimums are different from last year, too (more detail on those in the Remixer Sign-up Rules).

This challenge is in the fannish tradition of reverse big bangs, and remix challenges, but with a twist. Podficcers will submit a number of works, and writers or other creators sign up with their fandom preferences to create multimedia remixes. Podfic submissions are matched to remixers, who then have two weeks to listen to the podfics they’ve received and find inspiration. They then have a month to create a fanwork inspired by the podfic. We use ‘inspired’ in a general sense - we want writers to consider podfics as complete works, so if there’s music, freetalk, cover art or sound effects that should also be considered. The complete work of a podfic also includes a podder’s tone, pacing, character voices they may or may not use, etc.

We ask that remixers are clearly inspired by the work or that your remix is clearly an heir to the podfic, so things like fandom, or characters, or setting may be similar. We won’t be policing how you’re inspired, or how you take the prompt, and the work a remixer produces may be very similar or radically different from the podfic they received. That’s part of the joy! You can take a look at last year’s Remixapod AO3 collections to see some of the many ways this can take shape!

Podficcer Sign Ups

Rules

• Sign up with a minimum 3 distinct podfic (for our purposes, this means podfic that have been published individually, or which can be listened to as standalone. For example, individual chapters of a longer podfic wouldn’t be eligible. Please use your judgement!)
• These must be from a minimum of 3 different fandoms
• No more than 6 podfic.
• Any format is ok, but please make sure the links are working.
• The podfic doesn’t need to be on the AO3, but we do need a static url where the podfic can be found (i.e. not a tumblr link. Dreamwidth/AO3/your own hosting is fine). A link to an archive which includes a summary, rating information and download/streaming links (such as the AO3, Dreamwidth/other journals, archive.org, etc.) is preferred over a link to an audio file.
• The podfic submitted must be made from either Blanket Permission works, or works specifically permissioned to be remixed.
• If you have a multivoice podfic you’d like to submit, you must have permission from all collaborating podficcers before submitting.
• You will need to be comfortable with your podfic being linked to on the AO3 as a “work inspired by”.

Guidelines

• Remixers will see all the podfics you submit, not just the ones they match on.
• When you’re choosing podfics, please follow your heart. However, you are being matched, and we are limited by the fandom selections of our remixers. If you can or wish to include at least one podfic from a ‘large’ fandom, that will increase your chance of being matched.
• Please bear in mind that not every remixer may be inclined or able to listen to explicit podfic, and including at least one podfic rated below Mature may make matching easier.
• Please, if possible, include a mix of durations. Not every remixer may be inclined or able to listen to a long podfic. Absolutely submit your epic! But also consider submitting something under 20 minutes, too.
• For each of your podfic, include a brief description/summary of why you’re submitting it, why you’d like to see a remix of it, or the parts of that podfic you particularly like or are proud of. This makes it easier for the remixer to engage with your podfic, and might lead to them listening to more of your submitted podfics than they might otherwise!

Remixer Sign Ups
