Thank you and Final Thoughts

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated, podficcers for submitting their pods to be remixed, authors for writing and making awesome fanworks, everyone who made treats, or boosted the challenge, or commented on works. This was our first time running a challenge like this, and we’re really happy with how it went, and the cool stuff that got made as a consequence of it. We’re grateful for everything you did taking part.

We want to do a couple things to wrap up the challenge for 2019.

Firstly, we’d really like to encourage you to browse the collection here (or treats collection) and find a work to leave a comment on. Our authors (and those who made treats) were awesome in participating, and made some really cool, thoughtful works, so we’d love if they could get some more love! If you’re a podficcer whose work got remixed, even writing a quick line to say that you like what they made, or are grateful for their remix, would mean so much to everyone who made stuff!

Secondly, we’d hugely appreciate it if you could give us some feedback. We want to give you a chance to do so anonymously, so we’ve made a quick google form. If there’s anything you liked, disliked, or think could be better if there’s a next time, please let us know here.

Thanks again, and (hopefully) see you again soon!

Your remixapod mods xx

Posting Instructions & Check-in #3

Final check-in

Authors, we have just sent out the email for check-in #3, your third and final check-in before the submission deadline next week, on Saturday 18th May. Please check your inboxes and reply to us before the end of Monday 13th May (12pm PST) to let us know that you're still participating in the challenge, and whether you're on track for submission so we know if we need to look for a pinch-hitter. Please take this opportunity to talk to us about getting an extension if you feel you need one!

Posting instructions

There are two collections for this exchange:

When posting, please also:

  • Link back to the work you are remixing as a 'work inspired by'.
  • Maintain the same locked-to-archive status as the work you are remixing.

As a reminder of future dates, the gift collection goes live on Wednesday 22nd May, and author reveals are on Wednesday 29th May. The final day to submit treats will be Tuesday 28th May.

If you have any questions or problems at all, please get in touch with us by email, twitter DM, or the question-asking post.

Happy remixing!

Treats & Check-In #2

Our second check-in of the challenge has just gone out to authors. This means if you signed up as an author, check your email and make sure you get back to us before the end of Monday 29th April (12pm PST). All we need is a confirmation you're still participating, and if not, we'll start looking for a pinch-hitter.

We are also doing treats for Remixapod! We've created a spreadsheet of every podfic submitted to remixapod, and we're making it available to everyone, regardless of whether you originally signed up or not. Anyone can create any remix of a podfic they desire. For treats, there are no format requirements, and no word limit. This means you could write a drabble, bake a cake, sing a song, etc. Our only rule is that, for accessibility reasons, all treats include a transcript if they're not in a written format.

The treats spreadsheet is HERE.

We'll be posting the posting instructions for treats alongside our assignment posting in a few weeks, but in the meantime, happy remixing! We can't wait to see what you make!

Matches and Treats

Matches

All matches have now gone out to authors. If you signed up as an author, please check your email and read your match email.

We've done our best to match everyone on as many podfic and fandoms as possible. Please let us know as early as possible if your match doesn't work for you, so that we can make arrangements.

If you have any questions for your podficcer, please ask the mods via email or DM ([community profile] remixapod or on twitter as remixapod), and we'll relay them to the individual podficcer. If you have general questions (about format, deadlines, etc), we'd prefer you to ask them in a public forum (on the question post, or on twitter) so that other people can see.

While you're writing, we'd like to ask you avoid the major archive warnings (Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Underage and Rape/Non-Con) unless your podfic already includes them. Remember that your fic should be a remix of, or be inspired by the podfic you received. The word minimum is 1,000 words. We'll be in touch with authors next on April 11th, our first check-in.

Treats

Challenge Tag Set

We won't be using a traditional AO3 tagset for the challenge, but we will be maintaining a list of all the fandoms that have been submitted by podficcers. We hope this can give authors an idea of what fandoms are available, and inspire you to include fandoms in your sign-up list.

We'll be keeping it updated as the challenge runs, so the list of fandoms will grow as more people sign-up.

You can view the list as a google spreadsheet here.

A couple notes:
We listed instances where fandoms were combined, or appear in different combinations separately, e.g. If "Star Wars Prequels" and "Star Wars Prequels & Clone Wars" appear separately, you can be confident there's at least one podfic submitted for just the Star Wars Prequels and at least one that is both Clone Wars and the Star Wars Prequels.

If you have any questions, just drop us a question in the comments here, or hit us up on twitter.

(Psst, if you don't see your Favorite Fandom, you can pimp by linking our twitter or sharing our banner on dreamwidth.)

Author sign-ups

No new info, just the relevant parts of the Intro and Rules post in one place for you. Please take another look at the full Rules, Timeline and FAQ to refresh your memory, if you need to.

You can view the list of fandoms submitted thus far on a google spreadsheet here.

Please sign up by replying to this post, including the following:

  • Email: (We need an email address to contact you on. This is how we’ll send you your matched list of podfics.)
  • Fandoms: (Please include all the fandoms you could listen to a podfic and write a min. 1k remix for.
  • Do Not Wants (DNW)/Vetoes: (Your DNW list may include tropes (e.g. “mpreg” or “kidfic”) and/or characters (e.g. “Tony Stark” or “David from Animorphs”), and/or ratings. Anything on this list will preclude matching to podfics containing those elements.)
  • Max podfic duration: (You won’t be matched with podfics over this duration. The list of podfics you receive may contain podfics longer than this, but will include at least one that matches one of your fandoms and is under this maximum duration.)

When you receive your match you will be able to see all of the podfic that they submitted, not just the podfic that you were matched on. At least one of these podfic will match your fandom, DNW/veto and maximum duration criteria.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions! We'd like to keep the comments on this post for sign-ups only, but we'd love any questions either on the question-asking post, on twitter at remixapod or by email: remixapod at gmail.

ETA: These are closed as of the morning of Sunday 24 March. Please get in touch if you have a question about your sign-up.

Podficcer sign-ups

No new info here, just the relevant parts of the Intro and Rules post in one place for you. Please take another look at the full Rules, Timeline and FAQ to refresh your memory, if you need to.

Please sign up by replying to this post, including the folllowing:

  • Static links (i.e. not tumblr links. Dreamwidth/AO3/your own hosting is fine) to minimum 3 and maximum 6 of your own podfic. Any file format is ok.
  • Include the fandom and duration for each podfic.
  • Whether or not you would like your podfic added to the treats spreadsheet, where anyone interested in the challenge (not just authors who have signed up), will be able to access the list in order to make freeform remixes.

Reminders from our rules that:

  • Your podfic must be from a minimum of 3 different fandoms.
  • They must have Blanket Permission or be specifically permissioned for this challenge.
  • Any multivoice podfic must have permission from the other readers.
  • Permissions are up to you to secure, and we will not be checking/monitoring whether works are permissioned.

Some additional sign-up suggestions from us:

  • Please bear in mind ease of matching when choosing your fandoms. Selecting at least one podfic from a larger fandom will make you easier to match (although ultimately, you must follow your heart!)
  • Please bear in mind that not every author signing up may be comfortable listening to explicit podfic, and including at least one podfic rated below M may make matching easier.
  • Please bear in mind that not every author may be able or inclined to listen to longer podfic. Absolutely submit your epic! But also consider submitting something under 20 minutes, too.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions! We'd like to keep the comments on this post for sign-ups only, but we'd love any questions either on the question-asking post, on twitter at remixapod or by email: remixapod at gmail.

ETA: These are closed as of the morning of Saturday 23 March. Please get in touch if you have a question about your sign-up

Remixapod 2019 Intro & Rules

Remixapod is a multi-fandom fanwork remix challenge where authors create written fanworks that are remixes or inspired by audio podfics.

This challenge is in the fannish tradition of reverse big bangs, and remix challenges, but with a bit of a twist. Podficcers will submit a number of their already existing works, and writers sign up with their fandom preferences. Podfic submissions are matched to writers. Writers then have two weeks to listen to the podfics they’ve received and be inspired. They then have a month to write a minimum of 1k 'inspired' by the podfic. We use 'inspired' in a general sense - we want writers to consider the podfic they receive as complete works, so if there’s music, freetalk, cover art, sound effects, etc that should also be considered. The complete work of a podfic also includes a podder's tone, pacing, character voices they may or may not use, etc.

We ask that writers are clearly inspired by the work, or that the fic is clearly an heir to the podfic, so things like fandom, characters, or setting may be similar. We won’t be policing how writers are inspired, or how they take the prompt, and the work an author produces may be very similar or radically different from the podfic they received. That’s part of the joy!

Authors: one of your mods has written an example of what we’re envisioning, if you’d like to see an example. We’re in no way holding you to the same style of inspiration as the example, and want to give you space to explore how you take the prompt.

Podficcer Sign Up Rules

  • Choose a minimum of 3 of your podfics to submit (must be distinct, ie. not chapters of a longer podfic)
  • These must be from a minimum of 3 different fandoms
  • Submit no more than 6 podfics (this means you can have up to 6 separate fandoms)
  • We have no file format rules, but please include links to all the available formats (download, mp3, m4b, streaming etc.)
  • The podfics selected must either be of Blanket Permission works, or of works specifically permissioned for this challenge. (You can see example wording here)
  • If you have a multivoice podfic you’d like to submit, please make sure to ask the other voices before submitting.
  • The podfic doesn’t need to be on the AO3, but we do need a 'static' url where the podfic can be found (i.e. not a tumblr link. Dreamwidth/AO3/Your own hosting is fine).
  • You will need to be comfortable with your podfic being linked to on the AO3 as a “work inspired by”.
  • This isn’t a rule, but a guideline. When you’re choosing podfics, please follow your heart. However, you are being matched, and we are limited by the fandoms of our authors. If you can or wish to include at least one podfic from a 'large' fandom, that will increase your chance of being matched. Authors will see all the podfics you submit, not just the ones they match on.
  • Please, if possible, include at least one podfic rated below Mature or without explicit content. If you can't, that's ok, but it may impact our ability to match you.
  • Please, if possible, include a mix of durations. If you’ve got a 2 hour epic you love, do submit it, but consider also submitting an under-20 minute podfic as well.

Author Sign Up Rules

  • Sign up with a list of fandoms. Please include all the fandoms you could listen to a podfic and write a min. 1k remix for.
  • We need an email address to contact you on. This is how we’ll send you your matched list of podfics.
  • You can include a list of Do Not Wants (DNWs)/Vetoes. This may include tropes (e.g. “mpreg” or “kidfic”) and/or characters (e.g. “Tony Stark” or “David from Animorphs”), and/or ratings. Anything on this list will preclude matching to podfics containing those elements.
  • You may also include a podfic maximum duration. You won’t be matched with podfics over this duration. (The list of podfics you receive may contain podfics longer than this, but will include at least one that matches one of your fandoms and is under this maximum duration.)

FAQ

Can I sign up as both a podficcer and a writer?

If you have podfic that fills the criteria (min. 3 distinct podfic in min. 3 fandoms), and you're willing to write a min. 1k remix fic, then absolutely yes!

Can I write or make a treat?

Yes! We'll make a list available of podfic from podficcers who are participating in treats after we have finalised the assignments. Treats will have no word minimum, and can be a remix of any kind. This means you can write a drabble, record some oral not!fic, write poetry, song or meta, or any other form of remix that takes your fancy. For accessibility reasons, we ask that all treats include a transcript if they're not in a written format.

Podficcer FAQ

Should I make podfic specifically for this challenge?

Our intention is for podficcers to submit a minimum of 3 previously recorded podfic that are part of their existing archive/catalog. As we have not included time between sign-ups and reveals for podficcers to record/edit/submit podfic, we would not recommend creating podfic especially for this challenge.

I’m a podficcer but I don’t have many 'experimental' podfics, or any with sound effects etc to submit. Can I participate?

You can! We consider all podfics, regardless of how much audio experimentation you included, to be valid, complete works. Please submit any podfics you want to read a written response to. Your author may be inspired by your tone, pacing and reading in combination with the plot.

Can I submit podfic that I've made of my own writing?

Yes!

Author FAQ

Will there be a tag set?

Kind of - we'll be maintaining a live list of the fandoms on offer throughout signups, and updating it as podficcers sign up.

What if I don’t like any of the podfics I get?

We’re really sorry that happened. If you’ve made a good faith attempt to find inspiration but really can’t get anything going, please let us know as soon as possible. We’ll find a pinch-hitter for your podficcer, so their podfics will still get a fic. We’d really appreciate it if you’d join us in being a pinch-hitter, as maybe you’ll find some inspiration elsewhere, but we’ll ask you about that at the time.

What if I can’t make the deadline?

Please let us know. You can email us at any time, or let us know at one of the check-in points. Please let us know as soon as you can so we can arrange a pinch-hitter! We have some leeway to grant extensions, and will happily give them, but we’d appreciate if you’d let us know your plan for finishing so we can plan for opening the collection.

Question Asking Post

We appreciate this is a new format for a challenge, so we wanted to give people a chance to ask questions. This is a post to ask questions where everyone can see and we can post public answers. If you’d like to send us a question privately, you can email us at remixapod@gmail.com, or send us a dm @remixapod.
