Creator reveals!

Your Remixapod 2021 creators are revealed!

Remixapod 2021 main collection on AO3.

The separate Remixapod treats collection is still open for submissions, and will remain open, so please feel free to make and submit any treats that you find inspiration for. Remember that there are no minimums on Remixapod treats; the content moderation policy applies, and we do ask that transcripts or descriptions are supplied for non-text works.

Remixers: You may now update any author notes to identify yourselves & acknowledge any beta help you had, and identify yourself in comments.

Podficcers: Please dive in, enjoy the collection, and show your appreciation with kudos and comments! If you are curious to know how a remixer has taken inspiration from a source then we encourage you to comment, and make your own speculation, or ask them about it!

Finally, we’d be very grateful if you’d take the time to fill out THIS SURVEY (anonymously, if you’d like) and let us know how Remixapod 2021 was for you! We want to improve this challenge, and your feedback will be super valuable in helping us do that!

Thank you for a great Remixapod!

Treats and posting instructions

Treats

Here’s the treats spreadsheet!

Treats spreadsheet on google sheets.

Posting Instructions

  • Please link the podfic(s) you’re remixing as a Work(s) Inspired By when you’re creating your AO3 draft. Gifting your remix to the podficcer you’re matched with is not required.
  • All non text-based remixes (including treats) must have a transcript or description (this may be alt-text for image remixes or links to lyrics for fanmixes).
  • All remixapod creations (including treats) must follow the content moderation rules.

Please feel free to respond to any reader's notes/freetalk on the podfic that you remixed, in an author’s note or similar, or to provide any similar commentary on the remix you make. (We like to think this encourages comments!)

Also, here’s a reminder of the various format minimums:

  • Traditional fic and not!fic: 500 words
  • Poetry: 20 lines
  • Podfic remix/splices: 1 minute
  • Oral not!fic: 3 minutes
  • Fanmix: 10 songs
  • Fanvid: 30 seconds
  • Digital art: 2000 pixels (20x100, 80x250, etc.)
  • For analogue art and other physical creations, the only minimum requirement is that you consider it complete.
  • For any formats where minimums are not specified, we only require that you consider it complete (or use your judgement).

Remixes

To submit your remixes to this challenge, please add your AO3 work to the main collection:

Link to Remixapod 2021 collection.

The main collection is unrevealed, which means once you add your work to the collection and post, it will be found under Works > Works in Collections, rather than the usual place. The collection is also anonymous, which means nobody will be able to see which work is yours within the collection.

The main collection will close at midnight UTC on the 22nd May 2021.

Treats

To submit your treats, please add your AO3 work to this collection:

Link to Remixapod 2021 treats collection.

The treats collection is completely open and unrestricted, which means that anyone will be able to see any works you submit to it. We will also not be closing the collection at the end of the Remixapod schedule (but we’ll stop doing any promo after that point).

All remixapod creations must follow the content moderation rules.

Minimums do not apply to treats, but non text-based remixes must still have a transcript or text description (fanmixes may provide links to lyrics pages, images may use alt-text).

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions! You can comment right here, on the FAQ post, on twitter @ remixapod or send us an email: remixapod at gmail.

Content Moderation Policy

We’re implementing content moderation rules for this and future years of remixapod, as part of our efforts to reduce racist and other oppressive content in fandom as a whole, and in remixapod in particular, based on the Voiceteam moderation rules. Any podfic submitted for remixapod and any remixes created for this challenge must follow these rules.

These rules are intended to provide a way to flag and address racist and other oppressive content in remixapod fanworks. They're also intended to help participants think carefully and respectfully about their fanworks, including, for creators, whether they would benefit from the help of a sensitivity reader or consult. (Please contact the mods if you’d like help finding a sensitivity reader/consult at any point during the challenge!)

These rules do not prevent participants from submitting or creating fanworks about oppressive contexts, and we strongly encourage participants to both submit and create fanworks that focus on BIPOC characters. If your fanwork deals with characters’ experiences of racism or oppression, please tag and/or provide warning notes appropriately.

Anyone may flag a remixapod fanwork which they believe does not meet the rules of the content policy, as described below, using this anonymous reporting form.

Content Moderation

  • No podfic or creations containing racism, misogyny, ableism, fatmisia, transmisia or queermisia unless explicitly warned to contain such.
    • For example, language, slurs, tropes, character archetypes, etc.
    • Other oppressive tropes or language can also be flagged to mods and will be followed up in the same way as the above mentioned content.
  • No podfic or creations which use real-life BIPOC tragedies as a backdrop for stories that center on a White character.
    • For example, AUs focused on a period of time where BIPOC people are oppressed, such as a Slavery AU.
  • No podfic or creations which use negative stereotypes as a way to demonize or discard BIPOC characters in favor of White characters (i.e. ‘the angry Black woman’ or ‘the smart Asian’).
  • No podfic or creations which whitewash BIPOC, or which erase BIPOC in order to center White characters.

Policy Enforcement

  • If mods notice any of these content elements present in a podfic which has been submitted, we will remove it from the matching process. We may get in touch with the podficcer if this impacts our ability to match them.
  • If we notice any of the above oppressive content elements in a remix which has been created, we will get in touch with the remixer to ask that the appropriate tags/warnings be added to the AO3 post. If the remixer does not follow these guidelines, the work will be removed from any remixapod collections.
  • If anyone flags an untagged/unwarned oppressive trope or content, as detailed in the Content Moderation section, the mods will check for accuracy. If the oppressive trope/content is confirmed, the same steps will be followed as above.

If you have any feedback about other specific content you think we should be moderating, or any aspect of the content moderation policy, please let us know either through the usual methods or the anonymous reporting form.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask us! You can comment right here, on the FAQ post, on twitter [community profile] remixapod or send us an email: remixapod at gmail.

Remixapod 2021 Podficcer Sign-ups

Nothing new to see here, just the relevant parts of the Intro and Rules post in one place for you. Please take another look at the Intro & Rules to refresh your memory, if you need to.

Sign up by submitting this google form. Sign-ups will be open from the 6th March to the 20th March.

Things we need in your sign-up:

  • Email address
  • Whether you give your permission for your podfic to be added to the treats spreadsheet (where anyone interested in the challenge, not just remixers who have signed up, will be able to access the list in order to make remixes).
  • A static url where the podfic can be found.
  • A minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 of your own podfic.
  • A selection of podfic from at least 3 different fandoms.
  • Fandom, duration, rating, and content warnings for the podfic you submit.
  • Podfics that are from Blanket Permission works or have been specifically permissioned for this challenge.
  • All podfic submitted must follow the content moderation rules.

Some sign-up guidelines:

  • You must be okay with your podfic, if posted on AO3, being linked to the remix as the inspiration for it.
  • A link to an archive which includes a summary, rating information, and download/streaming links (such as AO3, Dreamwidth/other journals, archive.org, etc.) is preferred over a link to an audio file.
  • When choosing podfics, please follow your heart and go with the ones you most want to see remixed. However, you are being matched and we are limited by the fandom selections of our remixers. If you can, or wish to, include at least one podfic from a ‘large’ fandom as it will increase your chance of being matched.
  • Please include at least one podfic rated below Mature as not every remixer will be inclined or able to listen to explicit content; this will make matching easier.
  • Please include a mix of durations if possible. Not every remixer may be inclined or able to listen to a long podfic. Definitely submit your epic if you want to! But also consider submitting something under 20 minutes as well.

Sign up by submitting this google form (signups will be open from the 6th March to the 20th March).

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions! You can comment right here, on the FAQ post, on twitter [community profile] remixapod or send us an email: remixapod at gmail.

Remixapod 2021 Remixer Sign-ups

Nothing new to see here, just the relevant parts of the Intro and Rules post in one place for you. Please take another look at the Intro & Rules to refresh your memory, if you need to.

Sign up by submitting this google form. Sign-ups will be open from the 21st March to the 3rd April.

Things we need in your sign-up:

  • Email address. We need an email address to contact you on, this is how we’ll send you your matched list of podfics.
  • Fandoms. Include all the fandoms you could listen to a podfic and create a remix for, chosen from the tagset you can find on the sign-up form.

Guidelines for your sign-up:

  • You can include a more tailored list of DNWs in your sign-up beyond the common ones we have listed. We won’t match you with podfics that contain those elements, as far as we’re able to guarantee without listening to the podfic.
  • You may include a maximum podfic duration and you won’t be matched on podfic that go over this duration (the list of podfics you receive may contain ones that are longer than your max but this will not be one we specifically matched you on and there will be at least one podfic that matches your fandoms and is under your max).
  • When you receive your match you will be able to see all of the podfic that your podficcer submitted, not just the podfic you were matched on. You are welcome to remix any of these and are not limited by what you signed up with.

Sign up by submitting this google form (this form will be open from the 21st March to the 3rd April).

Remixapod 2021 FAQ

General FAQ

Can I sign up as both a podficcer and a remixer?
If you have podfic that fills the criteria (min. 3 distinct podfic in min. 3 fandoms), and you're willing to create a remix, then absolutely yes!

Can I make a treat?
Yes! You are more than welcome to make a treat, whether or not you’re involved in the main exchange. We'll make a list available of podfic from podficcers who are participating in treats after we have finalised the assignments. Treats have no minimums or restrictions on style or format. We ask that all treats include a transcript or descriptive commentary if they're not in a written format.

Podficcer FAQ

Should I make podfic specifically for this challenge?
Our intention is for podficcers to submit a minimum of 3 previously recorded podfic that are part of their existing archive/catalog. As we have not included time in the sign-up period for podficcers to record/edit/submit podfic, we would not recommend creating podfic especially for this challenge.

I’m a podficcer but I don’t have many 'experimental' podfics, or any with sound effects etc to submit. Can I participate?
You can! We consider all podfics, regardless of how much audio experimentation you included, to be eligible works. Please submit any podfics you’d like to see a response to. Your remixer may be inspired by your tone, pacing and reading in combination with the plot.

Can I submit podfic that I've made of my own writing?
Yes!

Will the remixers see all of my podfic or just the ones they match on?
Your remixer will receive a list of all the podfic you submit, regardless of which one/s they matched on.

Remixer FAQ

Will there be a tag set?
Yes! Once the podficcer sign-ups close, we’ll make the fandom tag-set available for remixers to use for their sign-ups.

I’m not a writer, can I still participate?
Yes! Remixapod is now multiformat, so if you are a creator of any kind then you can sign up as a remixer. Audio remixes, visual art remixes, and any other format you can think of are eligible.

Does that include not!fic?
Yes, it does! Text-based remixes of all kinds are eligible (as are all other kinds of remixes).

My style/voice/art is really distinctive! Do I have to try and disguise it for the anonymous period before authors are revealed?
No, you don’t need to disguise your personal art/podfic/etc style! The tradition of opening a collection anonymously is definitely skewed towards text-based formats (which are pretty easy to change after posting), but don’t let that influence the way you create any non-text remixes. Also, don’t feel like you need to do anything like making different files for pre author-reveal and post author-reveal - just make one finished product and let us mods worry about the behind-the-scenes AO3 collection wrangling.

Am I allowed to make any type of remix?
Yes! If you can think it, you can do it.

What if I don’t like any of the podfics I get?
We’re really sorry that happened. If you’ve made a good faith attempt to find inspiration but really can’t get anything going, please let us know as soon as possible. We’ll find a pinch-hitter for your podficcer, so their podfics will still get a remix. We’d really appreciate it if you’d join us in being a pinch-hitter, as maybe you’ll find some inspiration elsewhere, but we’ll ask you about that at the time.

What happens at check-ins?
We will send you an email, and ask you to reply within one week! All you’ll have to do is reply to the email we send you, and tell us whether you’re still participating in the challenge. Also, if you’re having any trouble with your remix, we’d appreciate a heads-up as soon as you can let us know, and the check-ins are an easy point for you to do that.

What if I can’t make the deadline?
Please let us know. You can email us at any time, or let us know at one of the check-in points. Please let us know as soon as you can so we can arrange a pinch-hitter! We have some leeway to grant extensions, and will happily give them, but we’d appreciate it if you’d let us know your plan for finishing so we can make plans for opening the collection.

If you don’t see the answer to our question here or on the Intro & Rules post, then ask your questions in the comments here and a mod will be on hand to answer! You can also contact us on twitter [community profile] remixapod or send us an email: remixapod at gmail.

Remixapod 2021 Intro & Rules

Remixapod is a multi-fandom remix challenge where creators make multiformat fanworks that are remixes of, or inspired by, podfic and audio fanworks.

This challenge is in the fannish tradition of reverse big bangs, and remix challenges, but with a twist. Podficcers submit a number of works, and creators sign up with their fandom preferences to create multimedia remixes. Podfic submissions are matched to remixers, who then have two weeks to listen to the podfics they’ve received and find inspiration. They then have more or less a month to create a fanwork inspired by those podfic. We use ‘inspired’ in a general sense - we want remixers to consider podfics as complete works, so if there’s music, freetalk, cover art or sound effects that should also be considered. The complete work of a podfic also includes a podder’s tone, pacing, character voices they may or may not use, etc.

We ask that remixers are clearly inspired by the work or that your remix is clearly an heir to the podfic, so things like fandom, or characters, or setting may be similar. We won’t be policing how you’re inspired, or how you take the prompt, and the work a remixer produces may be very similar or radically different from the podfic they received. That’s part of the joy! You can take a look at previous Remixapod AO3 collections to see some of the many ways this can take shape!

As much as we wish it, we can’t guarantee a perfect match. We will try our hardest to give you the best match we can but keep in mind that there is a wide variety of fandoms and tastes in an event like this and it’s impossible for everyone to all like the same things.

Podficcer Sign Ups

Rules

  • Sign up with a minimum of 3 distinct podfics (in this instance meaning podfic that have been published individually or which can be listened to as standalone. Individual chapters of a longer podfic, for example, would not be eligible).
  • The selection of podfic must be from a minimum of 3 different fandoms.
  • No more than 6 podfic.
  • The podfic submitted must be either from Blanket Permission works or be specifically permission for this challenge.
  • If your podfic is a multivoice, you must have permission from collaborating podficcers before submitting it for remixapod.
  • Your podfic, if posted on AO3, will be linked to the created remix as the inspiration.
  • For each of your selected podfic, include a brief description/summary of why you’re submitting it, why you’d like to see a remix of it, or the parts of that podfic you particularly like or are proud of. (This makes it easier for the remixer to engage with your podfic and might lead to them listening to more of your submitted podfics than they might otherwise!)

Guidelines

  • Any file format is okay, but please make sure the links are active and working.
  • The podfic does not need to be posted on AO3, but we do need a static url where the podfic can be found (i.e. not a tumblr link. Dreamwidth/AO3/your own hosting is fine).

Remixer Sign Ups

Rules

  • Sign up with a list of fandoms from the tag set that will be in the sign-up form. Include all the fandoms you could listen to a podfic and create a remix for.
  • Include an email address to contact you with. This is how we’ll send you your matched list of podfics.
  • All non text-based remixes must have a transcript or description (this can be alt-text for image remixes).
  • Remix minimums are:
    • Traditional fic and not!fic: 500 words
    • Poetry: 20 lines
    • Podfic remix/splices: 1 minute
    • Oral not!fic: 3 minutes
    • Fanmix: 10 songs
    • Fanvid: 30 seconds
    • Digital art: 2000 pixels (20x100, 80x250, etc.)
    • For analogue art and other physical creations, the only minimum requirement is that you consider it complete.
    • For any formats where minimums are not specified, we only require that you consider it complete (or use your judgement).

Guidelines

  • We have a list of common DNWs in the sign-up form as well as a space for any that are not in the provided list, you are welcome to list any DNWs you may have. Anything on these lists will preclude matching to podfics containing those elements, as far as we’re able to guarantee without listening to the podfic.

Content Moderation Policy

We’re implementing content moderation rules for this and future years of remixapod, as part of our efforts to reduce racist and other oppressive content in fandom as a whole, and in remixapod in particular. Any podfic submitted for remixapod must follow these guidelines, as well as any remixes created for this challenge.

Please see the full content moderation rules here.

Anyone may flag a remixapod fanwork which they believe does not meet the rules of the content policy, using this anonymous reporting form.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask us! You can comment right here, on the FAQ post, on twitter [community profile] remixapod or send us an email: remixapod at gmail.
